Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing range of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high, and a few battling for the low hand.
