After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The real advancement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
