Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he liked taking part in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The actual advancement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess.
