Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.

The real improvement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
