In hold’em, the first step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a certain sum of cash. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used phrase for this play. In the following step, the croupier shuffles the cards and deals out 2 cards face down to all players. A normal deck of fifty two playing cards is used in the deal. After the deal, there is the first round of betting. This sequence is usually known as a "pre-flop".

Following the 1st betting sequence, the top card is tossed aside. This discarded card is the "burn card", and this is done to guarantee that there is absolutely no fraudulent activity. The next three cards are then revealed face up on the table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now follows a 2nd round of betting, after which the dealer burns an additional card and flips 1 more card onto the poker table. Following this, participants can use the 6th card to form a 5card poker hand.

A further round of betting follows, and in a number of styles of poker, here is where the bet amount doubles. There is an additional round of throwing away a card, and a last placing of a card face-up on the poker table. This is known as the "river". Bettors can now utilize any of the 5 cards on the table, and/or the two cards in their pocket, to create a five-card poker hand.

To wrap it up there’s an additional sequence of betting. After that, all the players remaining start to display their hands. This is known as the "showdown". Obviously, the bettor who has the highest hand is the winner. When gamblers have even hands a sharing of the pot is used.

Holdem is a basic game to understand, but to achieve ability one needs a lot of studying.
